About The Bachelors of Education Online Degree

The bachelor of education online in International Studies in Education is a comprehensive international education studies programme focusing on education in the context of globalisation and the development of multicultural societies, sustainable development and on development studies and education in developing countries.

The bachelor of education bc provides a new option for students whose interests lie in international studies in education. It responds to the interests of students who want to work in international schools in Iceland or in schools or other educational settings in other countries. The details of b.ed course also aims at training teachers to meet the needs of a growing group of immigrant children and bilingual children in Iceland. Note: completing this b ed course details does not provide teacher certificate.

All teaching is in English in accordance with the aim of the b.ed course details program to meet the needs of a diverse student body. Students can choose between two specialisations:

1. Language teaching (B.A.)

2. Education in an international context (B.A.)

Language proficiency

As all teaching is in English, students must be able to communicate and hand in written assignments in English. All students who don’t have English as their first language or have little or no academic background are advised to register in the course GSS341G English language and use in their second year. Please note that applicants, whose native language is not English, may need to proof their English proficiency by submitting TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Bachelor s Degree in Education Programme Structure

The programme includes 9 mandatory subjects, total 100 units. The remaining 80 units are then devoted to language studies or other specialisation according to the below definitions. The programme is offered every other year.


Specialisation 1 : Language teaching

Students who choose language teaching take courses in a particular language for 60e.  Students can specialise in different languages. Students who want to get units for teaching practice in the courses Teaching English at lower secondary level, EFL learning and second language acquisition, Teaching English to young learners, Daily language and expression in Danish or Teaching Danish at lower secondary level must have an interview with the teachers of those courses prior to registration.


Specialisation 2 : Education in an international context

Students can specialise in a specific field within education in an international context. They can take their studies at the University of Iceland, at other universities in Iceland or at universities in other countries.


Students whose first language is not Icelandic can take Icelandic for foreign students as a 60e specialisation.


If a student has completed some studies at the bachelor´s level prior to entering the programme in International Studies in Education at the School of Education, he or she can apply to have those studies evaluated towards his or her 60e specialisation and 20e elective.
