Marine Biology Masters Degree Program Stucture

Unlike many other graduate best marine biology graduate programs in the world programs around the world, the two-year Masters program in Arctic and Sub-Arctic Marine Sciences and Fisheries has a minimum of dry classroom lecture and a maximum of field studies, hands-on data analysis, and interactive discussion with internationally-acclaimed professors from around the world.  Topics are taught in intensive week-long time blocks, and all of them are led by world experts in their field.

The MS study and courses amount to 120 ECTS (2 ECTS equal 1 week intensive work), of which 60 ECTS will come from course work and 60 ECTS from a one-year MS project.  Thesis research projects can be drawn from a broad range of marine biological and fisheries topics, with research supervisors arranged during the first year of the program.

Most of the themes explored in the program are given a week of intensive coverage, although the themes of population dynamics and fisheries assessment models are each given 1-2 months.  The topics include:

Admission requirements

The Master of Science program in Arctic and sub-Arctic Marine Sciences and Fisheries requires that all applicants have a B.Sc. degree in some area of science.  A B.Sc. degree in biology, oceanography, geology, computer science or mathematics is particularly helpful, but other relevant degrees will be considered.  A GPA of 3.0 or higher is normally required, although exceptions will be given in certain circumstances.


The Master of Science program in Arctic and sub-Arctic Marine Sciences and Fisheries will be taught in English.  Please note that proof of English proficiency requirements may apply to applicants whose native language is not English.
