About The Norwegian Language Course

The Norwegian language course is a one-year programme providing a general introduction to the Norwegian Society and Norwegian language.

The programme is aimed at:

  • Foreign students who want to take a Norwegian academic degree, such as nursing, teaching etc.
  • Exchange students with an interest in Norwegian language and culture
  • Immigrants wishing to learn about Norwegian society and learn the Norwegian language.

Norwegian Language Course Free Programme Description

Studies in the autumn semester consist of two course units, one with a focus on basic language skills and grammar, the other an introduction to the Norwegian political system.

In the spring semester, students are introduced to advanced Norwegian language training, with a focus on vocabulary and literature. Social studies in this semester focus on the Norwegian welfare state and the Norwegian community.

Students who achieve a grade of A or B in the first language unit (Norwegian Language and Grammar), are encouraged to take a social studies course unit taught in Norwegian in their second semester.Such students can choose from SO116S Welfare Sociology Analysis or PO111S Public Policy and Administration I. Such students are not required to complete SO122S Development Theories.

Students must pass NO135L Norwegian Language and Grammar, 20 credits, in order to proceed onto the course NO218L Norwegian Language and Culture, 10 credits.

Students registering at Norwegian Universities do not have to pay tuition fees

Admission Requirement

Most applicants from outside EU and applicants who does not have a Norwegian citizenship, residence permit or have a renewable residence permit in Norway, will not get a (student) residence permit based on the one-year programme ¿Norwegian Language and Society¿.
