Downloading a YouTube Video to Your Computer
Many are unaware that YouTube videos can be used without an available internet connection if downloaded ahead of time. This post gives step-by-step instructions for saving YouTube clips and videos to your computer for later use.
When an Internet connection is not available for accessing YouTube, you still can use the video by downloading it to your computer beforehand and showing it directly from your local hard disc drive. A local copy of a YouTube video is also useful for editing and/or integrating with other applications. We present a method for downloading this local copy. This method supports limited conversion formats, but it has only a few steps.
Step One: Select the YouTube video.
Find the desired video on YouTube and copy its URL.
Step Two: Use KeepVid.com
- Open up your browser and go to KeepVid.com
- Paste the YouTube URL into the URL field and select the “DOWNLOAD” button (above the large Download and Install icons).
A page appears allowing you to select the type of file the YouTube video will be converted to. The key things to watch out for are file types that are video or audio only or are different resolutions.
- Once you have decided on the appropriate file type click the >>Download<< link to download the file to the Downloads section on your computer.
Note: You can also right click the >>Download<< link and select Save link as… to save the file to a desired location on your computer.
