About The Masters in Environmental Law and Policy Program
The online environmental law degree at the Faculty of Law, in an Iceland University is a specialised LLM environmental law Masters Program in law created for students from around the world who have reached a relatively high standard in their basic legal education (corresponding to a law degree after at least three years of law studies) and want to focus on legal rules relating to natural resources and issues of environment or resource management in an international and European perspective. The
environmental law masters Program is conducted exclusively in English.
The LLM. master of environmental law and policy online Program is inspired by Iceland’s unique natural setting and legal history within the field of natural resources law. It is furthermore built on the law faculties’ strenghts in this area as well as in the field of international environmental law. The llm environmental law distance learning Program is organised in such a way as to provide in-depth analysis in the specialised fields of natural resources and international environmental law combined with an ample opportunity for participants to experience the natural wonders and beauty of Iceland and its culture.
The environmental law masters Program consists of 90 ECTS, including a final paper which counts for 30 ECTS or 60 ECTS, further information. It is a one-year Program beginning in September or January, providing participants with the opportunity to submit their final papers in August or January the next year.
Students that intend to graduate must submit both a printed and an electronic copy of their thesis. 3 printed copies should be submitted to the service desk in Gimli and the electronic copy should be submitted to www.skemman.is
Students should start by submitting an electronic copy of their thesis to Skemman. If the thesis is accepted you will receive an e-mail confirming this. This confirmation should be printed and handed in to the Service desk along with the printed copies and a declaration of access concerning all copies.
According to the rules of the LLM programme the applicant must have finalised a BA degree in law or an equivalent law degree to be eligible for the programme. If a certified copy of the diploma (graduation certification) is however not available when the LLM application is originally submitted, it must be sent to the Law office before the teaching commences. Otherwise the LLM studies cannot begin.
The aforementioned applies to all exchange students that change programmes.
According to the rules of the masters of environmental law Programme a student can be exempted from taking an exam in a particular masters of environmental law course or courses if the student submits the necessary papers of having finalised equivalent studies at a master´s level at another university.
As the master of environmental law and policy online programme is not a distant learning programme all LLM students need to stay in Iceland during the period when the classes take place.
In order to be eligible for the LL.M. Program in Natural Resources Law and International Environmental Law, a student must have completed a B.A. degree in law at the University of Iceland, or a comparable law degree from another University, (at least second class, upper division). This basic law degree should consist of at least three years of law studies. In case of doubt as to this condition, the Master´s Programme Board can require a student to submit information as to the nature and substance of his or her studies.
It should be noted that permits for entry and residence in Iceland, as well as financing, is the applicants´ own responsibility. The Faculty Office assists applicants in gathering information concerning entry and residence permits. For more general information concerning conditions for entry and residence in Iceland, the Directorate of Immigration should be contacted. Please note that the Directorate of Immigration can take up to three months to execute residence applications. Residence applications are sent to the Directorate of Immigration after the Master´s Programme Board has accepted an application.
Competence in English
Teaching, course work and examinations during the LL.M. Program presume a high standard of spoken and written English. All applicants, whose native language is not English, must submit a confirmation of their proficiency in English. This confirmation can either consist in a university degree conducted in English or an official score report of a standardized test in English.
The Faculty recognizes a score of 570 (230 – computer) in the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) as valid for these purposes. The Master´s Programme Board can accept equivalent results of other standardized tests, such as the IELT (International English Language Testing System) or the Cambridge Tests. Applicants are required to submit at least two recommendations from persons with knowledge of the applicant´s academic abilities, preferably from a former university teacher or a professional legal superior. Furthermore, applicants are asked to submit a Statement of intent where they should describe briefly their future academic and/or professional goals, perhaps even a suggestion or outline for a final paper.
Authentication of documents
Applicants can expect that documents they provide will be sent to the issuer and asked for affirmation of authentitiy of the documents, before applications are dealt with by the Master´s Programme Board. This procedure can take considerable time but applicants will be notified if documents they provide have to be dealt with in this manner.
